Learn And Play offers programs for children from infancy through first-grade entry at select locations. At each development stage, we strive to create a positive, nurturing environment where our students can feel welcomed and seen. Across the board, whether it be a Montessori or Play-based location, the care and safety of our students is our top priority. As early childhood educators, we have experience supporting the transition that many new students face when being away from home and family for the first time.

Separation anxiety can look different by age and developmental stage. For example, while an infant may cry when they notice their parent has left the room, a child in preschool may manifest their anxiety by showing signs of stress through tantrums. There are several effective strategies to help ease separation anxiety, both at home and at school –keep reading for helpful tips and guidance.

Independence at home

Promoting independence at home through solo play can help children become more comfortable spending time on their own. Encouraging activities that they can do independently—such as puzzles, drawing, or imaginative play—helps build their confidence and resilience. Over time, this practice allows children to feel more secure when they’re not constantly by a parent’s side, making transitions to school or new environments a little smoother.

Tip: Start with short periods of time apart, like having your child play in another room while you briefly step away. Gradually increase the time to help them build trust that you will return.

Establishing Routines

Establishing consistent routines is also key to helping children feel secure and prepared, both at home and at school. Predictable daily schedules—such as regular mealtimes, nap times, and play periods—help children know what to expect, reducing anxiety and resistance. When routines at home align with those at school, the transition between environments becomes smoother and more manageable for young children.

Tip: Try creating a simple visual schedule at home using pictures or drawings to represent daily activities. This can help young children understand and anticipate what comes next, making transitions feel more predictable and less stressful.

Care at LAPMS

At Learn And Play, we prioritize the safety, well-being, and care of every student. We believe that open and honest communication with parents is essential, and it’s through this partnership that we can best support each child’s growth and development. Our programs are designed to teach children essential life skills, and one of the key areas we focus on is social-emotional learning. This helps young learners recognize and understand emotions—both their own and others’—and begin to express their needs in healthy, constructive ways. Our dedicated teachers are committed to providing individual support, creating a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.

We understand the transition into a new environment can be challenging for some children. That’s why we work closely with families to ease the process in every way we can, from building trust and strong, caring relationships with our students to including activities we’ve noticed they love. These small but meaningful efforts help children feel more comfortable, confident, and ready to explore and grow each day.

Separation and new routines can be challenging, but you’re not alone on this journey. By encouraging independence at home, creating predictable routines, and partnering with us at Learn And Play, you’re giving your child the tools they need to feel confident and secure.
