Programs and Curriculum at ABC

Curriculum

A foundation to everything we do at abc is to instil in kids the good life habits that we as parents hope for them to continue through to their adulthood. This includes a love of healthy food, a love of physical activity, an introduction to sport, the importance of taking care of ourselves, learning to take care of each other.

To complement these overarching goals we use a play-based, project approach. We aim to stimulate children’s senses and provoke a sense of wonder of their surrounding environment. This means different things for different ages…

Infants (3-18mos)

Infants need to feel socially safe so they can explore their environments to the limit. Everything is new to them and even the simplest activities encourage imagination and curiosity. They are encouraged to explore cause and effect as their basic problem solving skills develop. Self-help skills are fostered through various ways such as feeding, crawling and walking, and various group and individual activities. Group interaction is encouraged to promote language and social skills. All of this is done in a loving and nurturing environment to ensure the little ones feel safe to explore and experiment.

Toddlers (19-30mos)

By this age daily structure and routine is formed and is incredibly important to these little people. Through this they learn a basic understanding of time and sequence of events. Calendar, weather, flashcards and simple memory games are introduced to reinforce letter, word and number recognition, counting, colours and shapes. Fine and gross motor skills, as well as hand eye co-ordination continuing to develop and improve through a variety of physical activities and games.

Pre-School (30-48mos)

Around this age children begin to analyze subjects and problems as a team to begin forming opinions and creating solutions. Simple science is introduced and early math skills begin through activities such as block play. Preschoolers are given choices and opportunities to explore their environment and materials independently. They become fully aware of cause and consequence through making choices and decisions on their own.

Kindergarten readiness is a major element to our Pre-School classes. Our Pre-School teachers use the Jolly Phonics program for reading and writing prep. This program affiliates letters with their corresponding sounds through the use of letter specific repetitive actions. Each child works towards writing simple words, especially the most important one to them…their own name.
